# Monero delisted: where to buy XMR in 2026 without KYC

> Binance, OKX and Kraken in Europe dropped Monero, and the EU bans it on exchanges from 2027. Where to buy XMR now: P2P, atomic swaps and instant exchanges.

**In short:** since 2024 **Binance, OKX and Kraken (in Europe) have delisted Monero (XMR)**, and from **July 2027** the European Union **bars regulated exchanges from offering privacy coins**. Holding Monero in your own wallet is still legal almost everywhere, but buying it on a centralized exchange keeps getting harder. In 2026 three routes work: **P2P markets with escrow**, **USDT to XMR atomic swaps** and **instant exchanges**. None needs an exchange account.

## Which exchanges delisted Monero

| Date | Exchange | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| 2021 | Kraken (UK) | Stopped offering XMR to UK customers. |
| January 2024 | OKX | Dropped Monero along with Zcash and Dash. |
| February 20, 2024 | Binance | Closed every XMR pair. Withdrawals stayed open until May 20, 2024. |
| 2024 | Kraken (Ireland and Belgium) | Ended XMR trading in both countries. |
| October 31, 2024 | Kraken (European Economic Area) | Ended XMR trading and deposits. Balances not withdrawn by December 31, 2024 were converted to BTC. |
| May to November 2024 | LocalMonero | The most used P2P market for XMR announced its shutdown and closed. |

A few centralized exchanges still list XMR, but they require ID and don't serve every country. Check each exchange's own site before signing up: availability changes often.

## Why this is happening

Monero is private **by default**: it hides who sends, who receives and how much. Anti-money-laundering rules require exchanges to trace their customers' funds, and Monero makes that impossible. So exchanges would rather drop it than risk their licence.

In the European Union, the **Anti-Money Laundering Regulation, Regulation (EU) 2024/1624 (AMLR)**, bars crypto-asset service providers from handling "anonymity-enhancing crypto-assets" from **July 2027**. The rule covers regulated exchanges and custodians. It **does not ban** individuals from holding XMR in their own wallet or using it person to person.

**Which to pick:**
- **Money in the bank or cash:** P2P Fiat. Pay by Zelle, SEPA, Pix, bank transfer or cash, and the seller's XMR stays locked in escrow until they confirm your payment.
- **USDT:** MoneroP2P's atomic swap. Nobody holds your funds during the swap and there is no account. Capped at 100 USDT per swap.
- **Other crypto:** the instant-exchange comparison, sorted by how much XMR you get. It also lets you [swap Bitcoin for Monero](/en/news/swap-bitcoin-for-monero-btc-to-xmr/).

## What to do if your XMR is on an exchange

1. **Withdraw it to your own wallet**, especially if you are in the EU or your exchange has announced a delisting.
2. **Use a non-custodial wallet:** [MoneroP2P Wallet](/en/wallet/) in the browser, Feather on desktop or Cake Wallet on your phone.
3. **Write the seed on paper.** If the exchange shuts down or converts your balance, what is in your wallet stays yours.

## FAQ

### Why did exchanges delist Monero?
Regulatory pressure on privacy coins. OKX dropped it in January 2024, Binance on February 20, 2024 and Kraken for Europe on October 31, 2024.

### Is it illegal to own Monero?
Not in most countries. The 2027 EU rule applies to exchanges and custodians, not to people holding their own wallet.

### Where can I buy Monero in 2026?
On P2P markets like [P2P Fiat](https://fiat.monerop2p.app/en/), with USDT atomic swaps or with instant exchanges. None of these routes needs a centralized exchange account.

### What replaced LocalMonero?
P2P markets with escrow like MoneroP2P Fiat, and decentralized exchanges like Haveno. Read the [P2P Fiat launch post](/en/news/buy-and-sell-monero-p2p-with-local-currency/).

### Can I buy Monero without KYC?
Yes. Atomic swaps have no accounts, P2P Fiat asks for no documents and A- or B-rated instant exchanges don't ask on normal trades.

### What if my XMR is on an exchange that is delisting it?
Withdraw it to your wallet before the deadline. After that the exchange may convert your balance into another coin.
