Frequently asked questions
These are the questions we get most, answer first.
What is MoneroP2P?
An open-source P2P platform to swap USDT for Monero (XMR) through atomic swaps that run in your browser. Nobody holds your funds: a contract holds the USDT and only releases it to the maker once you can take the XMR.
Do I need an account or identity verification?
No. There are no accounts. You need a browser wallet with USDT, a Monero address and a password for your recovery file.
Can I use it with real money?
Not yet. The service only runs on testnet (Arbitrum Sepolia and Monero stagenet) until the contract and the crypto core pass an external audit.
How much does MoneroP2P charge?
The contract charges a percentage of the USDT when the swap completes. The percentage is set when the contract is deployed and capped at 1% in the code, which nobody can change. Refunds pay no fee. You also pay gas on the USDT network and the Monero network fee.
Who sets the price?
Each maker publishes their price in USDT per XMR. The maker daemon computes it from several public sources plus their margin. The app shows the exact XMR amount before you deposit.
How long does a swap take?
Usually 30 to 60 minutes, mostly because of the Monero network confirmations the app waits for before asking you to confirm.
What if the maker does not send the XMR?
You do not confirm and you refund your USDT before deadline t0. The app asks you to automatically if the XMR is not verified as that deadline approaches.
What if I close the tab?
Reopen the app, click Resume and use your recovery file with your password. Do it soon: if the XMR did not arrive, you must refund before t0.
What is the recovery file?
A password-encrypted file holding your half of the swap key. With it you can finish the swap, claim the XMR or refund the USDT from any browser. Without it and without the original browser, the funds of a swap in progress cannot be recovered.
What are t0 and t1?
The contract's two deadlines. Before t0 you can confirm or refund. After you confirm, or between t0 and t1, the maker can claim. From t1 you can refund if the maker did not claim.
Can my funds be frozen?
Tether, the USDT issuer, can freeze addresses. Each swap uses a separate contract so one freeze does not affect others, but the risk exists. XMR cannot be frozen by an issuer.
Which USDT networks are supported?
In testing, Arbitrum Sepolia. Arbitrum is planned and Tron is under evaluation; its contract already compiles but still needs testing on its testnet.
Do I need ETH besides USDT?
Yes, a little of the network's coin (ETH on Arbitrum) to pay gas for the deposit, the confirmation and a possible refund.
Do my keys go through your servers?
No. Keys are generated in your browser. The backend only relays public protocol messages and rejects any message containing a full private key.
Is the code open source?
Yes, under the AGPL-3.0 license, at github.com/juanjobs39-cloud/xmrp2p. We publish SHA-256 sums of every site file so you can verify the app matches the code.
Can I become a maker?
Yes. You need XMR, an always-on machine running the maker daemon, monero-wallet-rpc and an account with gas on the USDT network. Instructions are on the Become a maker page.
Is this legal in my country?
It depends on your country. You are responsible for complying with its laws, including tax rules. We do not give legal advice.
